Always look in the box

One Man's Web > Computers > Always look in the box

One of the things I do in my time off work, is recycle computers for people in Baxter, refugees, sundry grandparents and so on.  It's always wise to look in the box.  The last computer I received came like this:  a taxi driver friend took a passenger home late at night and discovered they could not pay the fare.  As security for payment she took a computer.  The person never paid, so my friend kept the computer. She gave it to me as a swap for some internet time for her children.

I decided to rebuild this one for my mother-in-law.  It was a bit rough, with a full size power supply shoe-horned into a slim line box.  But a P3 for grandma was a bargain, and a big improvement on the old clunker she has now.

I'm glad I looked in the box.  The a: drive was held in with duct tape. The power supply was held in with Tec screws. The case of the power supply was removed, and resting on the CPU case.  The hard drive was held by one screw, jammed under the CD.  This was a potentially fatal computer.  ALWAYS look in the box.

It's just a bit rough!

The power supply is in the top of the picture. You can see the cut away metal underneath the chassis bar, with the supply leaning on the CPU.  The 240 volt connections are exposed!

Just waiting for you to touch me... or for a stray contact to the case.

Ahh, duct tape!  Nearly as good as Araldite!
